a surprise shower well worth the throwing

Operation “Surprise Tammy Baby Shower” was an absolute success! While Hurricane Irene tried her hardest to beat us and threatened to kill the power to our ovens, the baking commenced and the sun finally came out for our dear Tammy’s shower :)

The shower was a book themed co-ed shower. The invitations had little bookmarklets in them for each guest to insert into their gift (i.e. favorite childhood book) and write why “baby shu” was going to love it too. All the food and drinks were named after nursery rhymes and most of the recipes came from Tammy’s pinterest (best shower/gift inspiration EVER, hello lucky charms ice cream sandwiches!).

Oh yeah, and she had absolutely no clue :)

We ate, mingled, laughed, talked about babies and dogs, and finally opened gifts. It was a precious, precious thing to share with the Shugarts and such wonderful friends.

Lastly, there were homemade dog treats (Sara, you have the most amazing baking skills) for everyone to take home with them to their pups (shh..this is b/c most of our friends are people we’ve met at the dog park).

Tammy (and Ashley and baby shu too) you are loved by many both near and far, but we hoped to remind you of all those that love you near :)

Just a Regular Tuesday

Today started out just like any other day. Well, any other day after you’ve moved into a new apartment. We tripped over our share of boxes, had coffee, tripped over a few more boxes, had breakfast, got a little stressed over all that still needs to get done, then took Jude out to the dog park (because HE was really stressed out and needed to get out of the mess).

After thoroughly wearing our sweet puppy out with stick throwing, we headed back to the house to pile into the car and make a trip to Ikea. There’s this funny thing they don’t tell you about apartment living in D.C. - yes your apartment will be small, yes you will be able to figure out how to fit in it AND even like it, but if you move from one small apartment to ANOTHER small apartment - your old stuff will absolutely not fit into the NEW small space. So this week has been a rubix cube of figuring out what furniture we need to sell on Craigslist in order to buy new furniture, (both off craigs and ikea) which will in turn somehow work in our new space. Hence, our Ikea trip this afternoon.

Ok, so maybe today wasn’t EXACTLY just like any other day, but it sure took a huge turn while in the Ikea checkout line. I should back up. About two weeks ago (wow, almost exactly), I quit my job as a paralegal at the law firm I’d been working at for the past year. While I met some really incredible people there (whom I will miss dearly-and already do!) and I know that it’s exactly where I was supposed to be this first year in DC, I was completely unfulfilled. After much prayer, I took a leap of faith and left the firm in order to pursue something more akin to my passions: art and photography. I desperately needed creativity back in my life. While this choice was incredibly scary, Jonathan and I have both felt this equally incredible peace about the whole thing. We kept finding ourselves telling eachother “this is crazy, but it feels so right.”

Well, apparently God really was watching out for us. One week after my last day at the firm, a position at (once like a spark) photography was posted by a friend of Jonathan and mine’s on facebook. The opening was for a full-time, work-from-home, Creative Coordinator and the description of the position was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Not to mention the company was started and is run by what seems to be the most incredible circle of women, their aesthetic is exactly what I look for in a wedding photography company, and they’re even passionate about supporting the arts (hello using etsy artists for photo shoot props!). So, I sent in my materials and waited. The following day, I found out that they had received 80 applicants for the position in a matter of 24 hours, but that I had made it to the next cut! I now had to send in a short video of myself answering a select set of questions. I sent mine in and a day later got an email asking if we could have a phone interview on Monday. (Now is where I’m really starting to get excited AND nervous). I didn’t want to get my hopes up, but at the same time, oh my gosh-I’d made two big cuts! Throw in moving over the weekend to keep my mind off of it (haha, yeah right) and you’ve got a pretty crazy week! On Monday we had our phone interview and after, I was given one last assignment relating to aesthetics and creative writing. So I sent it in and waited (and asked about a zillion people to pray like crazy). Now fast forward to today in the Ikea check out line…

I.Got.The.Job!!! Some definitely twirling and squealing took place at the Ikea in Maryland today. Talk about God’s provision. I was only out of work for 2.5 weeks, not to mention the fact that the job is so right up my alley and I couldn’t be MORE excited about it :) Thanks to everyone who was sending prayers our way this week! We’re feeling incredibly blessed right about now.

Now, if only we could do something about all those boxes….right Judebear? :)

There are some very exciting things going on in my life right now, so the plan was to post Kristi

There are some very exciting things going on in my life right now, so the plan was to post Kristin Wiig’s “So Freakin’ Excited” video, but then I got all caught up in Stefon the City Correspondent again… oh Stefon, you do this to me every time. So now even though this post no longer makes any sense, it does indeed make me very, very happy.

“So, Stefon, what did you do this summer?”-Seth

“All of it.” -Stefon

also watch out for:  Furkels…a.k.a…Fat Urkels which will have yourself asking “did I do that?”

bad blog

Jonathan and I were driving to none other than the Container Store this afternoon (surprisingly my first trip there EVER, but believe you me, it will definitely not be my last) when he informed me that I’ve been doing a very bad job lately. “Oh gosh” I think worriedly, “have I been a bad wife lately? a bad weimaraner mama? has he finally realized that he picks up the poop EVERY time we go to the park? or is it just that the dishes have gotten ever so high in our sink…” He then turns to me and says “you’re blog is really lacking, babe.” (Shew). So here I am trying to appease the husband and make up for my lack of blog posting :)

Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin. This summer has been such a whirlwind for the Mayo family. We traveled out of state to three of our dearest friend’s weddings (two of which we were both in), we’ve made tough and life altering decisions (hello career changes), we’ve had incredibly sweet family drive 11 hours to come visit us (two different sets of family!), we’re in process of moving to a new apartment (about 6 blocks away from the apt. we’re currently living in, don’t laugh - it has central A/C, lots of windows, a dishwasher, our bffs will be our neighbors, and it’s only 3 blocks from the metro!), and lastly, Jude is recovering from kennel cough. And now, a picture post:

It’s been an incredible summer and we’ve been so blessed to see all the people we absolutely adore so much. Love you all!

p.s. we’ve also almost beaten Jude’s kennel cough. Yay!

and everything was right in the world again

I wouldn’t even know where to begin for an update tonight, so for now, I’ve got my weimaraner back from doggie-day-care and all is right in the world. Happy Monday everyone.

p.s. poor Ben.
